Education in UK

  • In the UK most undergraduate degree programs take three years to finish; however, the “sandwich course” is increasing in popularity, which is four years and involves one year in the work place (normally in your third year).
  • In Scotland the courses are four years in length for undergraduate programs.

How to be prepared?

  • Use an extensive online platform listing a wide variety of Bachelors in the UK to decide what best fits your goals.
  • Make sure you have enough to cover your study expenses. This includes university tuition fees, accommodation costs, the cost of food, travel costs and extra activities. You’ll need to prove you have enough to study in the UK in order to get your student visa, as well.

  • If you need the extra cash and your Bachelor’s degree leaves you enough extra time to be able to hold a job, try looking into part-time job opportunities even before leaving for the UK.
  • The sooner the better. This way you get better chances of a cheaper flight ticket. But make sure you first get your student visa. Sometimes the visa process can take a few months and you risk missing your flight if the student visa process gets delayed.

Documents required:

  • A current passport or any other valid travel ID
  • Proof of financial capability that you can finance your studies for the duration of the course in the form of bank statements or payslips for the last six months
  • Details of your intended place of stay and travel plans
  • If you are from a region where you have to take the tuberculosis (TB) test, you have to submit your medical reports
  • Contact details of at least one parent or a guardian in your home country if you are below 18 years.

When do I apply?

  • Start early and by August, shortlist 8-12 universities that you will apply to. Visit university websites and note application requirements, deadlines etc.
  • By September, be familiar with bank loan options and scholarships to fund your studies.
  • Start working on UCAS admission form (for UG courses)and individual college applications (for PG courses).
  • Prepare for required standardized tests like GMATGRE, UKCAT, TOEFL or IELTS – depending on the course and university.
  • By June-July or three months before the test date, register for GMAT/register for GRE.
  • Register for TOEFL/IELTS at least a month before the test date.
  • Take the required tests around SeptemberPlan for buffer time in case you need to retake the test. Check test taking and re-exam process and guidelines.
  • Shortlist the colleges and prepare for your application. Think hard about what makes you unique as an applicant and sketch out your strengths and self-assessment.
  • Contact your professors and direct managers for the required 2-3 reference letters. At least a month before your application deadline. Check the deadline timetable!
  • Begin drafting your SOP and essays. Give a month’s time to structure these documents properly.
  • Apply before the deadline!
  • Don’t delay replying to college e-mails. And there will be quite a few!
  • Appear for personal/video interviews. These are scheduled around January to March.
  • Once you get acceptance letters, make your decision as soon as possible.
  • Depending on the deadline, notify the universities of your decision.
  • You would need to pay a non-refundable deposit to confirm your admission.
